The Best Small Brewery In Town

The Antelope is a long-standing watering hole on Maple Road in Surbiton, a suburb of South West London. For years, it kept the same owner, the same aesthetic, and was frequented by the same few locals each day, until it was eventually taken over and reinvented as The Antelope Ale and Cider House, in 2014.

A microbrewery was almost immediately installed in the former stables at the back of the beer garden, and thus was born the Big Smoke Brew Company, a saving grace for local ale lovers (of which there are many). They then expanded in 2016 and took over The Albion on Fairfield Road in Kingston Upon Thames, giving them two sites in which to create their relaxed and friendly atmosphere and serve their exemplary food and drink. Their beer is seasonal, flavoursome and vegan friendly, with a varied permanent collection of nine beers that are always on offer. These are:

  • Electric Eye Pale Ale, at 5% ABV
  • Solaris Session Pale Ale, at 3.8% ABV
  • Underworld Milk Stout, a very popular choice at 5% ABV
  • Medicine Man IPA, at 6% ABV
  • Sunshower Extra Pale Rye, at 4.7% ABV
  • The Judge Double IPA, at 8.5% ABV
  • Cold Spark Lactose Citra, with added lactose for a creamy finish, at 3.6% ABV
  • Dark Wave Porter, at 5% ABV
  • Knuckle Merchant IPA, a collaboration brew with Electric Bear Brewing Company, at 7% ABV

Big Smoke also host a biannual Beer and Cider Festival in the gardens of both The Antelope and The Albion; one at the beginning of summer, around April/May, and one at the end, around September. With over 60 home-brewed beers and ciders on offer, the festival is one of the busiest times of year for the brewery, who cater for a huge range of palates; there, you can find everything from a sensually creamy Vanilla Stout to a bold and refreshing Mango Cider. An exciting up-and-coming addition to the London brew scene!
